Watch for Naming to See Trends Unfold

The Lolcats website has turned into a community. For over a decade, volunteer creators have made and still make memes for participants to read, enjoy, vote on, and pass around.

Interestingly the creators and readers developed a language, acronyms, and even spelling unique to the community.

Communities do this often. Early on, you see people kick around ideas until a majority seems to agree on which is the best, most descriptive (or, in the case of Lolcats, the funniest word or phrase.) Soon everybody in the community is using that one word.

You can get a sense of the new trends just emerging in professional communities by watching for name-play. What concept is your community trying to name right now?
