What if 70% of the value members receive from the association is found at the annual conference? What if only 10% of your members can get to the conference? Is membership worth it if most members are getting 30% or even 50% of the value they could be getting?
What do we do when members cannot attend our in-person events?
Members of international associations talk about how difficult it is to get to in-person meetings. Some industries no longer fund travel. It can be challenging for parents with young children to attend. People are concerned about their carbon footprint. Now with COVID-19 and maybe for a long time, meeting in person will be difficult.
It is not that in-person meetings will never come back, they will. In the meantime, let’s make our virtual meetings more engaging, more fun, and much more participatory. Soon we might find we are purveyors of both the best online and in-person meetings, so all of our members benefit from the ability to attend.
Last week I promoted a session to teach chapter leaders, affiliate leaders, staff, and speakers how to design more engaging online meetings. Many people reached out and asked if I could put on an open session for them.
Thank you all for inquiring! The answer is a resounding YES! Let’s get together and learn how to engage participants in the virtual setting.
