Associations’ New Role During an Industry Downturn

For three years, Sandy went to work, and she never knew if she would work the whole day or if she would be laid off by lunch. Mark works for a company whose CEO routinely takes a poll about who can do without a paycheck this week. Mary works for an organization where end-of-year bonuses are not paid even if the staff has achieved all their metrics.

Some associations serve industries or professions whose heyday is in the past. Caring, smart, and generous professionals work in these fields. Unfortunately, circumstances conspire to make their day-to-day lives miserable.

What can associations do?

  • Provide members some stability within the halls of the association
  • Keep the creativity flowing by creating projects and awards
  • Curate a forum for members to support each other
  • Enable member’s related side-gigs
  • Develop career training

Even though your association may be hurting too, the organization can play a very important role in member’s lives.
