Why all the recent hubbub about culture? Well, partly because we all want to enjoy a healthy working environment and partly because we want to get things done. A good culture greases the wheels for everything from conversations to project management.
We also care about culture because our culture manifests outwardly. Others can see our culture. Board members can see staff culture. Staff can see board culture. Members can see the staff and board culture. Prospective members can see the member culture.
Cultures give off vibes. Positive. Negative. Happy. Downtrodden. Welcoming. Pretentious. Egalitarian. Cliquish. Supportive. Close-lipped.
Outsiders feel the vibe the culture gives off, and they ask themselves these questions:
- Are they like me?
- Would I proud to be affiliated with this group?
- Do I want to become involved with this group?
Great member cultures, board cultures, and staff cultures attract great members, board members, and staff members!
