Are we born with it? Or did we learn it?
Leadership skills, social skills and, communication skills: are they innate or do we learn them? Maybe some people are born with it. Maybe some of us showed a slight talent early, we were rewarded for that talent and that talent grew into a passion. Most of us believe that there are some talents we are just born with and if we didn’t get that gift we are out of luck. New science says this is wrong. We can learn anything we want to learn. Even really hard things.
This means we have the choice to change our leadership style.
We can choose to deal head on with conflict.
We can become a more powerful public figure.
We can be more empathetic.
Anytime we say, “that’s not me” it’s a choice. And it is a choice for staff as well.
But what does it take to grow into the type of professional we most want to be? Passion, seeking out learning opportunities and practice. We have to want to do it. When we see a change a staff member needs to make they have to want to do it too. It’s not that we can’t do it, we can. We just have to want to.
