I used to think it was hard to make friends in the Lehigh Valley (PA). As an outsider this region seemed somewhat insular. When out for a walk or a hike on-coming walkers didn’t smile or say “hi” often and compared to my home state of New Hampshire this seemed odd. But, now I feel like I smile all the time and when I’m out for walks people smile back. This area seems much more friendly to me. I now understand it wasn’t the valley but, it was me the whole time. So this makes me wonder if the same actions and mindset can be applied to business success.
There was a little research bite that I stumbled across that said something like people choose individuals to back (hire, invest in, do business with) who they perceive will succeed in the future. In fact in this study the perception of future success was more persuasive than a past track record of success. Interesting and a bit counter-intuitive for me. If this is true, having a mindset of future success might just lead to….. success!
Now I’m not saying there’s not hard work or determination needed to reach your business goals. Because, yes, we’ll all still need to work hard, have grit, test new things, try often and fail some. But, that mindset of “I can do this”, “I’ll get this eventually”, is likely far more productive than the “well, if it works…” mindset. Think SUCCESS!
