On my way to work every day I pass by the office of a landscape design/yard care business. Out front there is a large, easy to read, beautiful sign. The sign itself is great but, it is posted on a rocky, muddy lawn with one dead tree. It has been like this for years. On the same commute I also see a contractor who is building their own offices. Again, there’s a wonderful sign saying that this site is to be the new home of (Name Here) Builders. But, construction has been going on for three years. So the landscaper is esentially saying hire us and we’ll make your lawn look like the surface of the moon while contractor is telling me we build nice buildings but, it may take a decade.
I understand the old saying, “the cobbler’s son is the last one to get shoes”. It’s hard to find time to do great work for yourself when you are spending all your time doing great work for your customers.
So while I understand how hard it is to step away from paying business to do the same work for your business it is a really great way to demonstrate your talents. A landscape company’s headquarters should have amazing, beautiful, inviting landscaping. A web developer should have a truly compelling website. A hair stylist should have great hair. Make sure the place where you do the work (your offices, your store, etc.) reflects the great work that you do.
