Completing a Google Places listing is a quick and powerful way to build your web presence and is particularly useful if you have a physical location. This easy project will help put your business in front of many more potential customers and it’s free. Google pulls from Google Places to power Google Maps and Google search. Potential customers just have to type your business name into Google Maps to instantly get directions, a description, hours and contact information. This saves them a few clicks which is important because more clicks means more opportunities for customers to get diverted to another business.
Before you start you may want to get your address, phone, web address (if you have one), hours of operation, keywords and a short description ready. Think carefully about your keywords and try to anticipate all they ways someone could do an internet search for your product or service. You will have a chance to refine your keywords later but the more they match what your customers use the better. There’s a lot of variety in how people conduct their searches, for example all the below phrases could be used to find the same business:
- Greenhouse in Mystic, CT
- Mystic garden center
- Who sells perennials in Mystic?
- Nurserys in Mystic, CT
- Hothouse plants
- Mystic potted plants for sale
Using the above search phrases my list of keywords could look something like this: Greenhouse, GardenCenter, Perennials, Nursery, Hothouse, Potted Plants, Plants, Mystic, CT
Once you have your information ready go to Google Places. Log in and fill out their forms. When you submit the form they’ll call you with a PIN number that you’ll need to type in to confirm it’s really you.
Later on you can go back in to Google Places and add video (optional) or photos (optional). You may also want to occasionally go visit your account. Use the analytics to see how many people are searching for you and what keywords helped people find your listing. You can play with keywords to see what increases traffic.
Adding a listing for your business in Google Places is a free and easy tactic that I recommend you try.
