What does the act of strategic thinking look like?
It might look like staring into space, taking a walk down the hall for a coffee, taking a shower, laying in bed, or jogging in the park.
Flashes of inspiration tend to happen in those little-in-between-doing-stuff moments when our brains are idle. I have the best ideas one minute before I fall asleep, while I’m exercising, and when I’m driving in silence.
Now consider what ticking through a to-do list looks like.
You might be looking intently at the screen and typing quickly at the computer. You might be seen talking over a project with a coworker. You might be overheard prioritizing team deliverables on the phone.
It is interesting that tactical work looks a lot more like work while strategic work can seem like a big bunch of nothing.
We know the value of strategic thinking. But often we feel like we can’t give ourselves permission to do it because it looks, and sometimes seems like we are not doing anything at all.
