Can success be solely attributed to your hard work? On the other hand is it mostly do to luck and serendipity? Being in the right place at the right time. Or perhaps it’s a mix of both? Many business experts think success comes from a combination of work and luck.
My hunch, though, is most of those lucky people manufactured their own luck. This is why:
- They became an expert – expertise comes through practice, the more expert the more interesting you become
- They showed up – an opportunity to speak in public, ‘yes, I will prepare for that’. An opportunity to write an article, ‘sure, I will get you some ideas right away’. An opportunity to connect to those in the industry, ‘absolutely, reserve my spot’. And perhaps they had to show up for years, amplifying others before anyone took notice of them
- They cared – generosity and caring is magnetic. I love what Bernadette Jiwa has to say about caring, “start whispering, “I see you” -instead of screeching, “LOOK AT ME”.
Sure, we hear about the accidental discovery of a former waitress turned celebrity or the business that was instantly successful and that is luck. But for the rest of the 99.9% of us we will have to work hard at manufacturing out own luck.
