For-profit companies are offering many of the benefits of an association. Sometimes with more splash, flare and resources than your association can match. Software providers are putting on elaborate user-symposiums that overlap subject matter given at the annual conference. Consultancies are offering industry research and data on the profession sometime for free. Abundant and good content is being created by industry freelancers up to the biggest industry providers.
Despite this change in the environment your competition is not your problem. Competition is a symptom of the problem.
Your members engage with your competition because they are getting their problem solved there. They would engage with you if they knew you could solve their problem better. So your problem your competition. Your problem is:
1) You are not solving your member’s problem and/or
2.) They don’t know you can solve their problem
Are new competitors popping up all the time? That is a sign you have a problem. You can fix that problem by solving your member’s problems and letting them know you can solve their problems.
