This past Tuesday I learned first-hand about the unique qualities executives look for in association leaders. I joined many other tweeters to take part in the weekly #AssnChat . This week’s topic was association leadership.
Looking at the patterns in the tweets I found three top qualities the group values in association leaders. Leaders who are:
- Action-oriented – they are self-starting and self-motivated, they embrace change, they challenge the status quo and they push ahead.
- Outward-focused – these folks do a lot of listening, they are empathetic, they seek to understand their members better, they work hard on communicating well and they value inclusion and diversity.
- Life-long learners – they are curious, they read, they follow other leaders and are mentors themselves. They learn through trying new things and then learn from their mistakes.
There is a special unique-to-associations vibe to these three qualities which I love. As we strive to improve our leadership skills we can start in these three areas.
This chat is thoughtfully hosted by @kikilitalien Tuesdays at 2PM EST. Join the #AssnChat to share and learn what other association leaders are thinking and doing.
