I have a company stalking me. Sure it’s by email so really I’m just annoyed. They keep sending me emails and it seems like more and more every day, trying to sell me their services. There are no interesting how-to tips to get my attention. There’s no quality free offer. There’s nothing they share that’s relevant to my work. I’ve tried to opt out but, the emails keep coming. I’m not even sure how they got my email in the first place.
I just got a brochure for a convention they are hosting. The cover actually listed some topics of interest but, as soon as I saw their name I immediately threw it in the trash. Me being annoying about their email practices cost this company even a look at their newest product offering.
So how do you not annoy customers and potential customers?
1. Let them opt in. Sure it’s okay to purchase a list and use it once but, better to build your list based on the readers permission
2. Offer real value. That’s why blogs, newsletters and social media posts are so hot – free advice, how-to, entertainment or opinion. The author or company is building credibility with their audience over time
3. Don’t send promotions out too often. Is your audience regularly getting a “please buy this” email or call daily or weekly? That could be too much.
Being mindful of how your messaging is being received will help you sell the way your customers want to buy.
